Vic Student 6-7 Placement Guide

From Term 2,  2025 our online program allows parents of Year 6 students to apply online to neighboring Victorian government secondary schools for Year 7 in 2026. (Not all schools are part of the online enrolment program in 2025 will continue to use paper-based application forms)

The online enrolment application aims to simplify and streamline the enrolment process for parents/carers of Year 6 students.

It is important to note that the placement policy is followed by all government schools. You can view the placement policy. Your chances of being offered a place in the schools you apply for are not advantaged or disadvantaged by using this online system.

The online system will allow parents/carers to complete an online enrolment application for up to three secondary schools. This ensures that you are providing up to date, accurate information to the schools you are applying for and removes the opportunity for transcription errors. As it is online, an application can be completed on laptops, PC’s and mobile phones. The system will also allow you to upload documented proof of residential address.

The Year 6 to 7 placement information pack for parents and carers provides guidance to assist families of Year 6 students moving to a government school in 2026.

The parent/carer information pack is available for download from the Moving from primary to secondary school website from the start of Term 2, 2025.

Moving from a government primary school to a government secondary school

If your child is seeking a place in Year 7 at a secondary school next year, you will need to:

1. download the information pack available from the start of Term 2, 2025. The pack includes the application form. Your child's primary school may also give you a copy of the pack.
2. use Find my School to locate your local secondary school or preferred school, and read about School zones and Enrolling in school.
3. register for or login to VicStudents for the online application form https://students.educationapps.vic.gov.au/s/ for your child's primary school by Friday 9 May 2025. All information entered on the VicStudents portal must match the existing information in your parent COMPASS account. (i.e. Parent ‘A’ spelling of name and email address must match)

Year 7 placement is decided by secondary schools using the Department’s Placement Policy. However, all communication about your child's placement must be with the Year 6 Coordinator or Transition Coordinator at your child's primary school until the placement is confirmed.

You will receive notification of your child's Year 7 placement offer on Tuesday 1 July 2025.

All government secondary schools will host a Year 7 Orientation Day (for Year 6 students) on Tuesday 9 December 2025.
