VICTORIAN ESSENTIAL LEARNING STANDARDS

The Victorian Essential Learning Standards have been developed by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority as a framework for whole school curriculum planning. The Standards will assist school communities to make decisions about their curriculum programs and inform approaches to teaching and learning and assessment.

The Victorian Essential Learning Standards describe what is essential for all students to achieve from Years Prep to 10 in Victorian schools. They describe what students should know and be able to do at different stages of learning and provide a clear basis for reporting to parents and for planning programs.

The Standards are developed within three core and interrelated strands. These outline the knowledge, skills and behaviours all students should acquire if they are to successfully manage themselves and their relations with others, understand the world and act effectively in that world. The three strands are: Physical, Personal and Social learning; Discipline-based Learning; and Interdisciplinary Learning.

At Doncaster Gardens the Victorian Essential Learning Standards are considered, in conjunction with the Curriculum Planning Guidelines, the Principles of Learning and Teaching P–12, and the advice on Assessment and Reporting.

ESL

  • Many children at Doncaster Gardens are from an E.S.L. (English As a Second Language) background.  There are students from many cultures, having varying levels of proficiency in their first language and in English. These children require targeted teaching, extra time, support and exposure to English.
  • Children spend several hours a week working in small groups, developing and extending their literacy skills with an E.S.L. specialist teacher. Many of the activities are for functional English - giving and following of instructions, which helps build some of the language skills needed in the classroom.
  • Language games are used to develop students in their use of descriptive language. The children enjoy poems and songs, where they practice the rhythm and intonation of English.
